Ebook About
From Midwest Book Review:Perhaps the icon of excess, cruise ships carry many strange diversions for those with money to burn. Ship for Brains looks into…the twists and turns of politics that often occur when one lives on a ship and what can be experienced upon it. With a grand dose of humor and a good dose of memoir, Ship for Brains is a fine pick, not to be overlooked.Book of the Year, finalist—Foreword MagazineBronze—London Book FestivalFinalist—New York Book FestivalFinalist—San Francisco Book Festival Returning with his award-winning wit and delightfully candid narrative voice, Brian brings us the first and only exposé of art auctioneering on the mighty liners, where the tenet of "what happens at sea, stays at sea" has always been observed - until now. We are transported to the sea as our likable guide vividly shares his misadventures, triumphs, flirtations, and, above all, his amusing and astute insights into human nature. In the Cruise Confidential series Brian David Bruns spills the dirt—or in this case, the dirty water—on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the years he spent working on cruise ships takes readers down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving readers gasping with laughter as they’re assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre. From Booklist:Although this isn’t an exposé of cruise lines so much as a lighthearted adventure, readers planning a cruise will glean lots of useful information, and cruise veterans may find themselves looking at their familiar turf in a new, slightly suspicious way.“This man has seen it all!” - Deborah Roberts, ABC 20/20“Bruns' prose … proves his steady and deliberate writing voice.” - Writer’s Digest“The real party is going on in the crew’s quarters.” - USA Today“I found it absolutely hysterical!” - Peter Greenberg, Today Show“Part Love Boat, part Mutiny on the Bounty, Cruise Confidential does for cruising what Animal House did for higher education.” - New York Times Bestseller J. Maarten Troost“Cruise Confidential is a deliciously addictive read, a blistering kiss-and-tell about the dysfunctional life working on cruise ships.” - Doug Lansky, Travel Channel“These hilarious misadventures at sea will shock and delight any buffet-ready cruise traveler.” - Jen Leo, author of Sand in my Bra“The funniest travel book I’ve read in years.” - Peter Mandel, author of My Ocean Liner“This is a really entertaining true tale by a guy who struggles through the bizarre world of cruise ship employment. Bruns paints a clear picture of ‘how the sausage is made’.” - San Francisco Chronicle“I couldn’t put it down.” - Chicago Sun-Times“Cruise Confidential is a juicy tell-all. The crew deals with the ‘sweatshop’ conditions by indulging in massive amounts of alcohol and sex.” - Cleveland Plain Dealer“Bruns doesn’t hold back when it comes to discussing his experience of working on cruise ships.” - Thomas Cook Magazine (UK)“Witty and self-deprecating [Bruns] has a flair for dialogue, and his book is chock full of wacky characters…” - Blogcritics Magazine“With a grand dose of humor and a good dose of memoir, Ship for Brains is a fine pick, not to be overlooked.” - Midwest Book Review

Book Cruise Confidential 2: Ship for Brains Review :

If you have ever wondered what life is really like for a member of the crew on a cruise ship, this book (and the other books by this author in this series) are for you. The author writes simply, authentically and in an entertaining fashion.Very entertaining.I also learned how some cruish ships may allow you to invite a member of the crew to your table for a dinner. The ship will pay for the meal.Given how bad the crew food is, it is really something you can do for a crew member show goes out of his (or her) way for you. Eating it from the guest menu is 100x better. So keep this in mind if you take a cruise.
The author's first book contained a lot of information that a person might want to know if they were considering working on a cruise ship. This book offers less information and is more of an autobiography. After working in the dining rooms aboard Carnival cruise ships, the author gets the opportunity to become an art auctioneer and make some serious money, though his real motivation is to be assigned to the same ship where his girlfriend works. This book follows him through his auctioneer training, his work as an associate, and his first cruise as an auctioneer. It ends there though, leaving some basic questions unanswered. How long did he work as an auctioneer? Was he fired for not meeting the often unrealistic sales quotas, or did he quit due to the stress? Was he eventually reunited with his girlfriend? A short epilogue could have wrapped up everything nicely. We learned from his first book that working on a cruise ship is not all fun and games, but as a concessionaire and member of the staff he was assigned better living quarters, had more time off, and earned much better pay. Since he used to work in the dining rooms for long hours, I expected him to show some sympathy for those crew members. I also expected to hear of the contempt that lower paid crew members might have for him and other staff. The social dynamics on board could have been a great addition to the story but instead there were only a few hints of these things. The book mostly contains tales of his misadventures on shore with his often heavy drinking, arrogant, and womanizing coworkers. While these made for entertaining reading at times, most wreaked of heavy embellishment.I read this book shortly before going on a cruise and hoped to gain a little insight to the art auctions on board. While I can't expect him to give up all the trade secrets, by the end of the book I hadn't learned much. Well, maybe I learned something. If you are willing to work long hours for low pay, then working on a cruise ship might be right for you. Fringe benefits include cheap drinks in the crew bar, and endless opportunities for casual intimate encounters with your coworkers. If you want to remain faithful to your girlfriend who works on another ship and you assume is staying faithful to you, I question your sanity. Oh wait, all of that was covered in the first book so save your money. If you just have to read this one, borrow it from a library or a friend.
